13 things you need while staying in the NICU. Around 20 weeks I discovered that I had Vasa Previa. This is where the umbilical cord crosses over the opening of the cervix. It’s very rare and I knew that my baby would be coming early because they didn’t want the baby to come out on her own. I entered the hospital at 30 weeks pregnant and I thought I would be there closer to 38 weeks. My body had other plans for me. I had my precious baby girl at 32 weeks. She was born on October 1st, weighing in at 4 pounds 4 ounces. She was immediately rushed to the NICU. I was so unprepared for her arrival and I really didn’t have a lot prepared for her. So I decided to put together a list of 13 items you may need while staying in the NICU with the baby.
I love my laptop and I needed it to watch Netflix and to write about my journey in the hospital. I also paid some bills and I worked on some homework for school.
Blanket and Pillows
They have blankets and little pillows at the hospital but there’s nothing like having your own to have with you. I brought my big ole fluffy blanket and a body pillow and I camped out on the couch for the time that I had to stay there with my baby.
I could still get food from the hospital for free with my insurance since I was breastfeeding. My spouse could not and the food at the hospital was very expensive. So he brought snacks and food that he could pop in the microwave.
I brought receiving blankets for my little one. I wanted to wrap her up tight, so that it could make her feel like she was still in the womb. I think it’s called swaddling your baby.
I brought my pump and cabbage leaves for my breast. I stored the cabbage leaves in the refrigerator. I also had a couple of nursing bras and nursing pads for any leakage that would occur. My nursing pillow was a lifesaver. I had a C-section and I could barely lift my baby girl up to feed her, and that’s when the nursing pillow played a huge part.
My feet were so swollen after giving birth to my baby and I couldn’t fit my regular shoes. Slippers were perfect for the hospital.
Activities for the older siblings
I have a son who is 8 years old and needed something for him to do while we spent days in the hospital. I made sure to bring his tablet and his Nintendo switch to keep him occupied.
I love reading books. When the room was quiet at night I would read my books. I would drift off to sleep reading my books. I would tell the nurses about my readings during the night time feedings.
I couldn’t wait to play dress-up with my little one. I bought the pajama onesies so that she wouldn’t be cold.
I made sure to bring butt paste. My little one’s butt would be so red after her pooping sessions and the butt paste really worked its magic.
We made so many memories while staying in the hospital. I wanted to make sure that we could capture those memories and tell her about them later.
You can never have enough hand sanitizer. We had so many visitors and I wanted to make sure that my baby was protected.
I brought yarn to make some crochet hats for my little one.
That’s it! I hope this list helps someone. What did you bring to the hospital for your little one?
